Background of the study
Open-pit mining, while economically beneficial, poses significant environmental challenges. In Obudu, this mining method has resulted in landscape alteration, loss of biodiversity, and soil and water contamination. Recent research (Akpan, 2023; Udo, 2024) highlights that the extensive removal of overburden and vegetation not only disrupts ecosystems but also increases erosion and deforestation. This study explores the environmental effects of open-pit mining by assessing changes in land cover, water quality, and ecological balance. It examines the socio-economic drivers of mining activities and the regulatory shortcomings that allow for environmental degradation. The integration of remote sensing data with field observations provides a comprehensive evaluation of the impacts on local biodiversity and community health. The study aims to propose mitigation strategies that balance mining operations with environmental conservation (Akpan, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Open-pit mining in Obudu has led to severe environmental degradation, including soil erosion, water contamination, and loss of biodiversity. These impacts have adverse effects on local communities, whose livelihoods depend on a healthy environment. Despite regulatory frameworks, enforcement remains weak, and mining practices continue to harm the ecosystem. This study seeks to identify the specific environmental consequences of open-pit mining and propose sustainable mining practices that minimize ecological damage and promote long-term environmental recovery (Udo, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the environmental impacts of open-pit mining.

  2. To identify key factors contributing to ecological degradation.

  3. To recommend sustainable mining practices.

Research questions:

  1. What are the main environmental effects of open-pit mining?

  2. How does mining alter local ecosystems?

  3. What mitigation strategies can reduce environmental harm?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Open-pit mining significantly degrades local ecosystems.

  2. Inadequate regulation exacerbates environmental damage.

  3. Sustainable mining practices can mitigate adverse effects.

Significance of the study
The study will offer actionable recommendations for policymakers and mining companies to balance economic benefits with environmental protection. Improved practices are expected to promote ecological recovery and enhance community well-being in Obudu (Akpan, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the environmental effects of open-pit mining in Obudu Local Government Area.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Open-pit Mining: A surface mining technique that extracts rock or minerals from an open pit (Udo, 2024).

  2. Biodiversity: The variety of living species in an ecosystem (Akpan, 2023).

  3. Mitigation Strategies: Methods aimed at reducing adverse environmental impacts (Udo, 2024).
